Jerry Brown must veto SB 1146 to protect 'separation of church and state'
Thomasson: "SB 1146 violates time-honored constitutional boundaries between secular and sacred."

Sacramento, California -- The Democrats in charge of the California State Senate have given final approval to SB 1146, which for the first time, puts the State in charge of tracking, monitoring, inspecting, investigating, and judging religious matters -- specifically, the moral codes and biblical values of California's Christian-format colleges. The Senate floor vote was 25 to 13, with only Democrats voting yes and only Republicans voting no.

"For decades, Democratic leaders nationwide have championed 'separation of church and state' as their expression of the First Amendment," said Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, which promotes moral virtues for the common good and which steadfastly fought against SB 1146. "Yet SB 1146 violates time-honored constitutional boundaries between secular and sacred."

"It's illogical and harmful for any politician who opposes mandatory prayers in public school to then support government mandates upon religion and religious matters," Thomasson said. "Religious diversity should be respected and protected, not disparaged and 'regulated.' Governor Brown should veto this controversial bill, which unnecessarily meddles with and mixes religion with politics."

A paragraph-by-paragraph analysis of SB 1146 (as amended August 19, and as passed August 30 by the California State Senate) shows how this unprecedented bill imposes State mandates upon religious institutions of higher learning by subjectively inspecting, judging, and enforcing religious "compliance."
